When the Avett Brothers get into it, you can’t help but dance, jump and sweat right along with them. The “Muppet-like intensity” (as accurately described by Vanity Fair) is what the band, from Concord, N.C., are known and loved for.

The kinda-folky, kinda-country, kinda-everything group signed with Columbia, worked with renowned producer Rick Rubin and their first effort on the label, I and Love and You, is due out Sept. 29. The single of the same name is currently out:

I’ve seen the Avetts three times in different years in Chattanooga, Tenn., Norfolk, Va., and Richmond, Va. At first, I was a little put off by their then Amish-like beards (Scott and Seth Avett have since shaved them). Then, there’s the banjo that Scott Avett jams on until he’s dripping with sweat, Bob Crawford’s stand-up bass and sometimes Joe Kwon’s cello.

Banjo? Cello? Doesn’t that mean…country? But the main refrain in “I and Love and You” is Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in? Well, that’s because this is a band that transcends labels and brings a tremendous amount of passion to their upbeat tunes and even their slow, emotional recordings.

“Die Die Die” was my first favorite and, don’t let the name fool you – it’s an upbeat tune.

The best way to enjoy the Avetts, though, is live in person. Among the stops on their tour are NYC’s Terminal 5 on Oct. 17th and Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium on Halloween.
